5th September, the birthday of late president Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, is celebrated as ‘Teacher’s Day’ in India.

Teacher’s Day emphasises the importance of teachers’ responsibility as well as the students to pay their respects to them.

An eminent educationist and an excellent philosopher, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan became the 2nd president of India on 13th May, 1962.

His students requested that his birthday should be celebrated in a notable way. Dr. Radhakrishnan responded by saying that rather than celebrating the day as his birthday, it would be better if it was celebrated as Teacher’s Day. This reflected his intense admiration for the teacher’s profession.

This proposal was accepted and India started celebrating 5th September as Teacher’s Day. Former president Dr. Abdul Kalam told that a good teacher does not only teach in an efficient manner but also they take the responsibility to bring up students with excellent behaviour.
