With Chennai metro city getting its first air-conditioned bus-stop, officials aim to have more of such stops depending on the success of the project especially when illegal stops thrive in the area. It is gathered that there are more than 100 illegal stops.
The officials are already into the process of removing them. 10 have been removed on 16th September (yesterday).
The decision to air-condition the bus stop was taken on the proposal received from a private contractor for this stop as more than 1000 buses ply through this.
The present plan is to construct 3 bus stops at 20’ distance from each other with a sitting capacity of 32 & a standing capacity of 45 each. They will have ATMs & security guards. The cost of the project is Rs. 1.25 Crores. CCTV will also be installed for monitoring. Reading room with newspapers will be available with Karnatic music being played.
The bus stop will be functional by 15th December. The vendor has been given a ‘no objection’ certificate & will maintain for 5 years.
There is a lot of development happening in the area and when metro comes up, it will be a prime place through which people will commute.
It was passengers in the temple town of Kumbakonam who first enjoyed the pleasures of an air-conditioned bus shelter that was opened at four-road junction near the East police station.
The AC bus shelter put by City Union Bank at a cost of `18 lakh was inaugurated by state minister R. Vaithilingam in May last year. The shelter can accommodate 30 passengers at a time. There is an ATM attached to the bus stop. A surveillance camera fitted to the bus stop that would be closed at night, is connected to the police station nearby.
