Though sudden evening showers bring respite from the sweating hot weather in Chennai, it has also brought with it some viral infections and fever too. According to city doctors, there is an increase in number of dengue cases in the recent days.

Patients come with complaint of fever, joint pain, petechial haemorrhage (in which people can find red spots over the body). On analysis, they are found to be positive for dengue, say doctors. They add that adult patients with dengue are more in number than children, especially those who are diabetic are more prone.

Speaking to one of the doctors from Global Hospital, she says doctors usually find more number of children affected by dengue, but this time it is contrary. Diabetic patients are prone to such viral infections and hence they need to be very careful. Further, we also see cases having very low platelet count, she added. Though low platelet count cannot be the only reason to conclude a patient as positive for dengue, more number of patients are found with platelets counting 50000 or 10000 which should normally be of the range 1.5 lakh.
