The possibility and threat of power cuts affecting the playing sessions in the Champion League Tournament involving participation of several countries about to start is looming Power cuts may occur due to overload.
Summer in Tamil Nadu was quite severe this year. This increased the usage of air-conditioners leading to a demand of power in Chennai leading to 13000MW. Power cut was forced to be imposed in major cities of the state like Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, and Salem, especially from 10.00 PM to 12.00 Midnight for half-an-hour on a rotational basis.
However, currently with the onset of monsoon, the climate is cooler reducing the demand for air-conditioners leading to reduction in power demand to the order of 12000 MW. This has somewhat offset the problem of overload.
Champion League Cricket tournament with the participation of many countries commenced yesterday, Wednesday, 17th September.. It will last till 4th October. With all matches scheduled during nights, it is feared that the problem of overload may occur forcing power outages.
An official from the Energy Commission informed that the problem of overload may be overcome with new substations. Steps have been taken to address this and work is in full progress. Hence, there is no need to fear the thrust of overload problem during nights.
