Chennai Metro Water (CMWSSB) is set to commission a new 6 lakh litre secondary treated water plant at Perungudi. Ground and surface water here in this area is exploited by the emerging IT parks on Rajiv Gandhi Salai. As a step to prevent this, the CMWSSB has derived steps to set up a water plant by November. This will be set up within the Perungudi Sewage Treatment Plant Campus. This is expected to meet the requirements on the IT corridor.

The capacity of the plant was finalized as 6 lakh upon deep assessment of estimated water requirements of the IT parks, multistoried residential structures and commercial buildings on OMR.

On consulting with flat promoters and realtors in the city, it is found that Chennai requires 20 lakh litre of water for construction related works. Private water suppliers charge exorbitant amount to provide this volume of water and they make use of water resources like open wells in agricultural fields and lake within the city and its surroundings.
