With the increase in the use of public transport facility from 41 to 70 per cent in Chennai, the city has been making investments to enhance several rapid transit projects. Most of these projects are being done at the urban core and the peripheral areas facing rapid development are left with poor transit systems. They are left with no choice other than depending on private vehicles and left waiting for long hours in heavy traffic. This gives rise to question if new rapid system like the Metro can bring a relief.
With people in the city turning richer day by day, the per capital consumption of floor space is increasing too. As the residential prices within city limits are skyrocketing, people started looking out for a place to live in the peripheral areas as it can fall within their budget. However, these areas are quite a bit away from employment, education and other recreational opportunities. This has indeed brought the need for betterment in transit system in these peripheral regions.
