According to results by new research, it is found that long-acting insulin is safer and has better effect in controlling the blood sugar than the conventionally used intermediate-acting insulin for patients with type-1 diabetes.
The research involved examining once-daily and twice-daily doses of both long and intermediate acting insulin types. Here is an excerpt from what Dr Andrea Tricco, a leading author and scientist at Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St Michael’s Hospital says:
Compared to intermediate-acting insulin, it is found that long-acting insulin is far better to use on patients with type-1 diabetes. It helps in controlling blood sugar level and prevent gaining weight.
With results obtained from 39 studies, Tricco and few of her colleagues compared the impact of long-acting and intermediate-acting insulin and derived the above results. While long-acting insulin consumes one hour to start functioning to control blood sugar level, intermediate-acting insulin requires one to three hours for the same function. The former remains in the body for 26 hours and 16 hours the latter.
