The price increase of the milk by private milk producers came into effect from yesterday, 5th October. Public have registered their strong protest against this.
Following the rise in milk price, the hotel owners have planned to increase the prices of coffee & tea.
Tamil Nadu has a milk consumption of 1.50 Crore Litres every day.
25 Lakh litres of milk are provided by Aavin. The balance 1.25 Crore litres are procured from private milk producers.
Chennai city requires 25 Lakh Litres every day. Out of this 11.50 Lakh Litres are provided by Aavin. The balance 13.50 Lakh Litres are provided by private milk producers.
There are 4 private milk producers operating in Chennai.
The private milk producers have been revising their milk prices 3 times during the last 1 year citing reasons of rise in buying price, increase in raw material process, and the increase in the prices of petrol & diesel.
Now, they have revised their milk price for the 4th time by Rs. 2/- per litre from yesterday, 5th October. Milk with enriched fat cost Rs. 48 per litre. The other varieties sold at Rs. 44/- (from Rs. 42/-) and Rs. 40/- (from Rs. 38/-), and Rs. 36/- (from Rs. 34/-).
With the increase in milk prices, prices of all other milk products such as ghee, butter, milk khova, milk powder, and ice cream have already raised.
Now, tea shop and hotel owners are planning to increase the prices of coffee & tea. Currently, tea is sold at Rs. 7/- per cup in small shops and coffee & milk are sold at Rs. 10/- per cup. An increase of Rs. 1/- per cup is being planned.
