Works are on to bring about a new tourist hub in Chennai. Chetpet lake restoration works are in full swing and a new tourist destination will be ready. This 15-acre water body will be rejuvenated at a total eco-restoration project cost of Rs 42 crore. The lake was kept choked due to inflow of neighborhood sewage. Through a course of time, it also served as a dump yard for the slums residing nearby.
Speaking to an official from the fisheries department, he says a jogging track and walking pathway are being developed at the moment. The pathway will run along a stretch of 1.4 km around the lake. The pathway will be finished by December 2015 and the estimated time of completion of the entire project is by March 2016. Officials also removed illegal sewer lines draining into the lake. Storm water drains are removed too.
This lake helps in recharging the groundwater level and serves as a rainwater catchment area. The renovation work includes facilities like:
· Fishing
· Boating
· Open air auditorium
· Park for children
· Food court with sea food delicacies
· Multi-level car parking with capacity to accommodate 200 cars
