SURGICAL GASTROENTEROLOGY DEPARTMENT OF MADRAS MEDICAL COLLEGE IS A ‘CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE’

M.R.K. Panneerselvam the Health Minister, Government of Tamilnadu announced on Sunday that the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at the Madras Medical College has been declared a centre of excellence for upper gastrointestinal surgery. The government order to this effect would be issued on Monday, the Minister said.

The Minister also announced that three more Medical Colleges in the State were expected to be opened next year at Sivaganga, Perambalur and Tiruvarur. He said that on August 20, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would launch the Rs.140-crore super speciality hospital in Salem.

He also distributed prizes to the winners of a poetry and essay competition on the theme “Freedom from Disease” organised by the Surgical Gastroenterology Department.

MMC Dean J. Mohanasundaram presented excerpts from the poetry entries at the contest.

The messages in verse included abstinence from “tobacco and TASMAC,” the restitution of “idli-idiappam” in place of pizza and burgers and need for exercise with increasing mechanisation of domestic chores.

A. Sundaram, MMC vice principal and C. Veni, Medical Superintendent, and General Hospital spoke.

S.M. Chandramohan, Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, said the department was presenting nine research papers at an international congress slated to be held in Japan next month.
