Chennai City Police will be very strict while handling the drunken drivers.  As many as 24,324 two-wheeler riders were booked until September beside 12,716 car drivers and the rest accounts for other vehicles including autos.

Across Chennai as many as 124 vehicle check points will be set up in the night with about 340 breathalysers (breath analyzers) being put to use.

In 2013, as many as 62,708 motorists were booked for drunk driving and as many as 15,308 motorists had their licenses suspended for a period of six months for recurring offences of drunk driving.

The drunk drivers alone coughed up Rs 30, 84,660 towards on the spot fine collected under the Motor Vehicles Act. This excludes the fine paid in the Court.

This year, as many as 1,000 licenses were cancelled for recurring offences, when the count reached the third time.Besides, the City Police has also recommended cancellation of about 5,000 licenses of repeat offenders.

Sources said the dip in the number of licenses suspended this year was tied to procedural delays in processing the recommendations.
