Reports from scientists from Chennai, Andhra Pradesh and Japan say citric acid based disinfectants are helpful in fighting against Chickungunya virus.
Recollecting the past victories of the acid, citric acid which was developed in Japan helped killing human influenza virus.
The granule form of the disinfectant was tested by a team belonging to the department of virology at Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi in association with Nichi-In centre for regenerative medicine, Chennai and Japanese scientists. Over 1000 samples of the virus was collected, developed and it was maintained in human and mosquito cell lines. Later, these were tested with the disinfectant which then showed good results in destroying the virus.
Speaking to Dr V.R.Saigopal, a professor of virology at SV University, he says the disinfectant was developed over 10 years ago in Japan. This is found in various food additives which are in use.
Considering India, the disinfectants used here contain phenol, foam or alcohol bases which are high in toxic content and they come with side effects.
