Special Status for Chennai University soon!

UGC (university Grants Commission) Vice-president, Mr. H. Devaraj announced that a special status – ‘University of Excellence’ – will be accorded to the University of Chennai.
 
Chennai University’s 157th Convocation Day was celebrated at the University Centenary Hall yesterday, Friday, 31st October.

Tamil Nadu Governor & Chennai University Chancellor, Mr. K. Rosaiah, presided over the function.

The Minister for Higher Education and the Chennai University Vice-chancellor, Mr. Palaniappan was the leading dignitary.

During his address, UGC Vice-president, Mr. H. Devaraj informed:

UGC has been practising the tradition of selecting universities providing excellent quality education and according special recognition.

The universities accorded with the special status – University of Excellence- will be sanctioned additional funds for their services of teaching & learning and the development of infrastructure.

Chennai University will be shortly given the special status as University of Excellence. UGC will grant financial assistance of Rs. 1500 Crores.

In addition, another Rs. 10 Crores will be granted for Chennai University’s traditional status.

In an effort to improve the quality of the faculty members of  Chennai University, a special scheme, known as ‘Skill Improvement of Professors’ will be introduced in the 12th 5-year plan. 1000 professors will be trained on this scheme.
