Shocking reports on the awareness level of city doctors

Would you believe if we say doctors are unaware of the possible side effects of the medicines they prescribe? Believe it or not, this is true. According to a report published in ‘Indian Journal of Medical Ethics’, most medicines and drugs are advertised in medical journals solely to boost their sales range. However, the medicine’s adverse effects are not told to the doctors.

Doctors depend on sales representatives or the advertisements they find on medical journals. Owing to this reason, they lag in sufficient information about the drug due to which they fail to make use of the medicines in a rational way.

On studying over 54 advertisements made on 145 varied drugs in the Journal of Indian Medical Association between November 2011 and November 2012, researchers found that most of the advertisements showcase only the brand name of the medicine, and not their therapeutic usage.

Out of 145 advertisements, only two of them explain about the adverse effects of these drugs. It is these two advertisements that contain the precautions, warnings and contraindications mentioned about the medicine.
