Though the city received heavy showers and most areas were found water logged, there is no sign of improvement with the increase in groundwater table. According to experts, the practice of channeling the run-off water into storm water drains serves to be the primitive reason for no significant increase in groundwater table. They suggest implementation of rainwater harvesting (RWH) on storm water drains. This is believed to help groundwater get recharged.
Rain water harvesting system helps collect one third of the rainwater received, whereas more than half of the rainwater reaches the road surface and in front areas of building structures without getting harnessed.
In cases of urban areas, the run-off water is collected with the use of storm water drains that are constructed by the corporation. These are constructed on one or either sides of roads. These finally end up getting drained into any of the three waterways present in the city which at the end reaches the ocean. This leads to wastage of huge volume of water by draining it into the sea. Major portion of rainwater received by the city is directed to the sea which when handled in a proper way will help the city have increase in groundwater table.
