Central government is currently providing subsidy for gas cylinders used for domestic purpose. In the year 2013, government devised plans to link availability of cylinders with that of the bank account of users.
As per this scheme, subsidies given for cylinders apart from the subsidized ones will be added to the bank account of the respective user. This requires each and every individual to open a bank account and get it registered with the gas agency.
As a first phase of execution, this scheme was launched in 291 districts including Pondicherry. It was then launched with few more modifications in 54 more districts on 15th November. For this new renovated scheme, it is said that there is no need to hold an Aadhar card, rather a bank account itself would suffice.
Central government is targeting to incorporate this system all over India from coming January. This Direct subsidy scheme will get launched in Tamil Nadu from the month of January. This requires the user to possess either an Aadhar card or a bank account mandatorily. Any one of these two should be submitted to the gas agency.
To note, this new scheme is introduced mainly to identify fraudulence happening in the supply of gas cylinders.
