Healthy Food Recipes - Fresh Sundakkai Sambar (Turkey Berry Sambar)

Ingredients:
  • Sundakkai (Turkey berry) - 1 cup (100 grams)
  • Toor dhal – 100 grams
  • Onion - 2 nos
  • Tomato - 2 nos
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 spoon
  • Sambar Powder – 1 spoon
  • Salt – To taste
  • Tamarind – a small lemon size
  • Oil – 4 spoon
How to prepare this?
  1. Pressure cook the dal with turmeric powder and water for 2 whistles and mash it.
  2.  Wash the turkey berry thoroughly. Either chop the sundakkai into half or put the sundakkai in a plastic bag close it and give a crush a little with a ladle. Keep the chopped sundakkai in a bowl of water, else its colour will turn black.

  4. Finely chop both the onion and tomatoes.
  5. Heat 3 spoons of oil in a kadai, add the curry leaves, chopped onion and tomato and sauté well till tomato mashed.

  7. Add the crushed sundakkai, salt, sambar powder and sauté for 2mins. 
  8. Add required quantity of water and pressure cook for 1 whistle.
  9. If needed, you can mash the turkey berry in the cooker using a ladle.
  10. Now add the cooked dal to it.

  12. Let it boil for some time and now add the tamarind juice to it.
  13.  Remove the lid and boil till the raw tamarind smell vanished.
  14. Heat oil in the pan and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds for tempering and add it to the sambar.
  15. Now add the chopped coriander leaves for garnishing and and convert to serving bowl.

  17. This sundakkai sambar tastes great with the steam rice! Enjoy its tangy taste!
Note:
  • Sundakkai is highly rich source of protein, calcium and iron.
  • If it is not possible for you to get the fresh sundakkai, instead you can get the sundakkai vadam from the super markets.
  • People who are in the plan of shedding off their body weight, they can very well include sundakkai in their daily diet.
