When one of the nine ‘grahas’ moves from one Rasi (Zodiac sign) to another, the phenomenon is called as ‘peyarchi’.
Though all grahas keep shifting, the movement of the graham ‘Sani’ (Saturn) and Guru (Jupiter) are considered as the most important.
As per tradition, when these 2 grahas shift, the people visit temples and pray and learn the forecast of the future because of this shift and act accordingly.
It takes 30 year for the planet Saturn to complete onw orbit around the Sun.
Considering the 12 Zodiac signs, these 30 years can be divided into 12 segments of 2.5 years each.
Sani or Saturn will stay in each of the 12 Zodiac symbols for 2.5 years each moving from one sign to another. This movement every 2.5 years is known as ‘Sani Peyarchi’.
Sani was staying in the house of ‘Thulam’ (Libra) and moved to ‘Viruchikam’ (Scorpio) at 8.54 PM on 2nd November according to the Hindu traditional Almanac.
However, this Sani movement has not been considered significant by the people of Tamil Nadu. Only the region of Kerala and some parts of Tamil Nadu adjacent to Kerala took this Sani shifting seriously.
In Tamil Nadu, people accord great significance to the Sani Peyarchi scheduled on 16th December. Noted astrologers also endorse this. The most traditional Hindu Almanac, ‘Vakya Panchamgam’, also confirms this.
The planet of Sani will be shifting from Thulam to Viruchikam at 2.43 PM on 16th December (Tamil Month Marghazhi 1st).
On this occasion, special festival is celebrated at the temples dedicated to Lord Sani at Thirukkollikkadu (near Thiruvarur) and Thirnallaru (near Karaikkal).
