According to the Meteorological Department, Tamil Nadu has so far received 91% of rainfall in this season. Officials in this department said Tamil Nadu will receive 44cms of rainfall on an average during the North East Monsoon season. They added that the state has already received 41cms of rainfall. This accounts for 91% of the rainfalls in the season and more rain is expected today.

Though South West Monsoon gives the maximum rainfall to the entire country, Tamil Nadu depends only on North East Monsoon for rains. Last year TN did not receive enough rainfall due to failure of monsoon; however, this year, it started earlier in many parts of the state and there will be more rainfall than the usual.

Rainfall this year is not sufficient in northern districts. All the lakes and ponds are filled with very little amount of water. However, southern states enjoy heavy rainfall and all lakes, reservoirs and ponds are over flowing. Water is being wasted since there are no sufficient dams to prevent their flow. Farmers are expecting prompt action from the Government to stop the water wastage in Thamira Bharani River.
