Tamil Nadu State government distributes free dhotis & saris to the poor people every year.
This is done with special consideration for the subsistence of handloom weavers in the state as well.
Pongal, the most important Tamil festival, is to be celebrated on 15th January.
To ensure that the distribution of free dhotis/saris well in advance before Pongal, the programme for distribution was started on 31st December itself by the state ministers in different districts.
This distribution is done through the ration shop.
All green ration cards, entitled for buying rice, are eligible for free dhotis/saris.
The revenue departments of the districts have arranged to despatch the free dhotis/saris in bundles to the ration shops.
2nd January being the 1st Friday of the month, it is a scheduled holiday for all ration shops. Hence, the distribution of free dhotis/saris will start on 3rd January (Saturday).
The ration shops will be open on Sundays falling on 4th & 11th January for this distribution.
9,62,423 people are getting the free dhotis/saris.
In Chennai, 938 ration shops function under 10 taluks will undertake the distribution with arrangements by the team led by Chennai district collector Ms. Sundaravalli.
Special security arrangements have been made for the ration shops to prevent overcrowding. Police force has been deployed to ensure that the beneficiaries stand in queue, wait, and collect their gifts peacefully.
30000 rations shops throughout Tamil Nadu will distribute the gifts while ensuring that they are received well in advance of the important festival of Pongal.
The Chennai district administration has already advised the public not to be in a rush, stand peacefully in queues, await their turn, and then collect.
