For the third successive day on Sunday, flight schedules went for a fling as impenetrable fog hung like a cloud over the Chennai airport runway till 9.45 am. As many as eight planes, due to land in Chennai between 5.30 am and 9 am, were diverted to Bengaluru and Hyderabad, as visibility was as low as 25 metres.
Only after it improved to 500 metres at 9.50 am, did the Met Department give the all-clear for flight operations to resume. But the effect that the three-hour hold-up had was felt through the day. Indigo, Spicejet and Jet Airways were the worst-hit as they had the most number of flights departing and arriving during the morning peak hour rush.
