AN ACCIDENT IN NOKIA PLANT CONSUMED A LIFE

A 22-year-old woman, working at the Nokia mobile handset manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur, died following an accident at the plant.
One S Ambiga, who had been working in the manual loader phase of the unit of Nokia in Sriperumpudur, for three years, was trapped inside the machine and severely injured on Sunday night. According to Company sources, Ambiga was on duty at the loader phase-III on the second shift on Sunday when her head and neck got jammed inside the machine. The accident took place around 7pm. By the time other workers on the shift switched off the machine it was too late. She was pulled her out and was taken to a private hospital in Sriperumbudur but in vain as she eventually died. It happened when the woman opened the inspection door of the loading machine, which was not her job. She should have called the floor leader for opening the inspection door. The machine is designed to switch off automatically when the door opens. Unfortunately on the fateful day it did not happen. Her neck got trapped between the door and the tray.
The Nokia plant was closed on Monday as a token of respect to the victim. In a statement, the Nokia management said the company had started investigating the circumstances that lead to the tragedy as per the factory norms and guidelines.
The government has constituted a committee under commissioner of labour to assess the reasons for accident.
There are about 7000 employs working in the Finnish mobile handset manufacturer Nokia .Out of which 70% are women.
