The project of laying the 5th & 6th tracks between Chennai Central Railway Station & Bridge Railway Station has started.
This will facilitate additional 2 tracks for suburban operations.
Regular complaints were being received by Southern Railway that suburban trains were operating late.
Also, express trains proceeding via Arakonam junction need to wait for hours to get signal clearance.
To counter these problems, the laying of 5th & 6th tracks between Chennai Central & Basin Bridge has been taken up.
Currently, there are only 4 tracks for the route Chennai Moore market Complex & Arakonam. Many trains going to major cities such as Coimbatore, Katpadi, Jolarpettai, Salem, Arakonam, Erode, and Tirupur operate on these tracks.
On the suburban routes, the stations are – Basin Bridge, Vyasarpadi, Perambur, Perambur Loco, Villivakkam, Korattue, Pattaravakkam, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyil, Annalur, Avadi, Hindu College, Pattabhiram, Nemilicherry, Thirunindravur, Veppampattu, Sevvaipettai. Putlur, Thiruvallur, Eekathur, Kadambathur, and Arkonam.
With this sort of heavy traffic, it is expected that the 2 additional tracks will help reduce the delays.
