Almost all the buses were off the road as the staff was busy electing their leaders. This put the public into hardship.
Thousands of bus commuters were stranded across the city on Thursday as more than 40% of drivers and conductors of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) stayed away from duty to cast their votes in the transport union elections.
More than 1,000 of the 3,000 MTC buses were off the roads. There were crowds of people seen waiting at every bus stop from Anna Nagar West and Koyambedu to Mandaveli and Saidapet. Neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts were as badly affected by the mess.
