There 3 rivers which run in the city – Adyar, Buckingham Canal, and Cooum. They run for a total distance of 77.98 km under the jurisdiction of Chennai Corporation.

Waste solids and contaminated/sewage water are dumped on these rivers in several places. This blocks the flow of the rivers. Further, the waste water from several residential complexes across the city is diverted to these rivers. Both the sea water where these rivers enter the sea as well as groundwater get heavily polluted because of this. Mosquito problems become more acute.

The public put up their grievance that a permanent solution must be immediately found and implemented.

As a follow-up, the places where waste water gets diverted to the river have been identified. Purification plants are being set up in these locations.

The plants will purify the contaminated/polluted water which may then be diverted to the rivers are used for other purposes.

Chennai MWSSB officials explained:

As announced by the Ex-Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the Assembly, 337 locations have been identified in the 1st phase towards implementation of a permanent solution. These are the locations where polluted/waste water is diverted to the 3 rivers.

Purification plants are being set up at a cost of Rs. 300 Crores in these 337 locations to prevent contaminated/polluted water directly entering the rivers.

Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs. 150 Crores which will be used for setting up purification plants in 179 locations in Chennai city.

79 tasks have e taken up. Drain-water pipes are being widened across a stretch of 78,573 metres. Drain water key pipelines are also being widened for a stretch of 27,480 metres.. Pumping/driving stations for drain water are being set up in 2 places

Renovation work is being carried out in the purifying plants at 28 locations.

These activities are scheduled to be completed before January, 2016.

Out of the 179 locations selected for 1st phase, work has been completed in 51 places including Trplicane, Adyar, Purasawalkam, Annanagar West, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Sowcarpet, Chintadripet, and Egmore.

The work in the balance 128 locations is expected to be completed in 9 months.

Once this is complete, the current trend of polluted/contaminated water entering the 3 rivers will be completely prevented.

In the purification plant at Koyambedu, 45 million litres of drain water is purified daily and sent by trucks for use in factories and parks maintenance.

Dumping waste water in the rivers from trucks/lorries is not allowed. Stringent action will be taken on those who indulge in this. However, they can be brought to the purifying plants for treatment.
