Researchers from IIT Kharagpur have invented a purification device at reduced and affordable rates for the people who suffer from malfunctioning kidneys.

It is to be noted that this invention was given a national award recently.

A member of the research team from IIT Kharagpur, Mr. Anirban Ray explained that it is astronomically expensive for the average citizen to have haemodialysis. The equipment for the treatment is not manufactured in India. It is imported from foreign countries like Germany, Japan, and Korea.

Currently, India does not have the technology for application and use of ‘hollow fibres’. In our invention, we have created the technology for application of hollow fibres to have haemodialysis.

Our invention does not require any imported equipment to operate. Some foreign countries have these devices which are patented by them. Hence, they enjoy a monopoly in the field.

Currently, a person needing haemodialysis needs to have haemodialysis once a week. He/she has to spend from Rs. 1000/- to Rs. 1500/- for the usage of 3 dialysers.

Applying our invention technology, dialysers can be manufactures at a cost of Rs. 200/- to Rs. 300/-.

Central Government’s Department of Science & Technology has come forward providing financial assistance for this research. Patent for this technology has been applied in India & USA.
