Prices of the flowers in the Koyambedu flower market have gone high on account of Tamil New Year’s day. During the Pongal Festival jasmine and Mullai flower was sold between Rs 400 to RS 700.

After this, the prices of the flowers have started coming down because there was excess harvest in Madurai and  Dindigul. Majority of the flowers were sold for less than Rs 50.

At this juncture, the prices of the flowers have gone slightly high on the occasion of Tamil New Years day. Jasmine was sold for Ra 150 per kilo on Sunday.

Speaking about this, Sri Arul Viswasam who is the President of Flowers Merchant Association said, “Normally there will be less supply of flowers during the month of December and January. But the demand will be more. That is the reason the prices are high. During Pongal festival 60 tonnes of flower were procured. Now the production is more in Tamil Nadu, hence there is supply between 100 tonnes to 120 tonnes. In spite of this, the rates have gone high due to Tamil New Years’ day. Prices will be on increase for the next few days.”
