‘Sounding traffic signals’ which will facilitate visually-impaired people to cross roads, are to be introduced shortly in Chennai Metro.
There have been pressing demands from various sectors to improve facilities in public places for the differently-abled people.
Both the central & state governments have been introducing various facilities. Chennai city will introduce the sounding traffic signals in the city traffic to facilitate visually-impaired people.
Int this arrangement, as soon as the green light is ‘ON’ for the pedestrians to cross the road, a ‘beep’ sound will also start. If the time for the green signal is 20 seconds, the beep will sound thrice for every second during the first 15 seconds and then 3 beeps per second during the last 5 seconds. The second part will alert the visually-impaired to cross quicker.
This is system is already functioning in Delhi & Bangalore.
This is now being introduced in Chennai at a cost of Rs. 75 Lakhs in 150 places.
