The government is all set to make use of 70 super computers in the country. These will be used for both government and private sectors for the purpose of researches in high levels. The research areas will include climate, defense, etc. It is to be noted that in these areas, normal computers would not suffice.

These high-end computers will be of a speed capacity of half petaflop to 20 petaflop. At the time of peak of projects, these may even raise up to 50 petaflop. Note: petaflop is a measure of processing speed of computers which stands for thousand trillion floating point operations per second.

Secretary of DST, Ashutosh Sharma says the project is of an estimated cost of Rs 4500 crore during its nascent stage. This will be executed by associating with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Department of Information and Technology (DIT).

This project is estimated to consume about 7 full years for completion. These computers will be made available in which researches can be carried out by scientists whenever needed. These will be capable of performing calculations that are not possible with laptop or desktop.
