Pan Masala and Gutka banned in Tamil Nadu

Posted on: 28/May/2015 12:16:10 PM
The Tamil Nadu Government has banned Pan Masala and Gutka which contains tobacco and nicotine for one year. The ban also applies to all food products containing tobacco or nicotine. The State government issued an extraordinary notification in this regard on May 23 as the earlier ban order came to an end on that date.

The ban is in conformity with the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 made by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India which mandates that tobacco and nicotine shall not be used as ingredients in any food product, as they are injurious to health.

Later, the Central government had enacted the Food Safety and Standards Act in 2006 and the legislation came into force from August 5, 2011 across the country.  To implement this Act, the Tamil Nadu government too had created the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department.
