The 1st generation students joining engineering colleges do really require counselling on the selection of the right course suitable for them.
During the current counselling session at Anna University, most of the 1st gen students were seen opting for Mechanical, or E & C (Electronics & Communications).
As on 14th July, 51489 seats have been offered. Out of this, 23353 seats went to 1st gen students. Again, 10000 1st gen students out of this had chosen mechanical or E & C.
Less than 300 chose Aeronautical, Automobile & Bio-technology.
Another interesting point is that only civil & mechanical engineering courses are available in Tamil Medium. Most students preferred mechanical over civil.
Experts in the field observe that this is a trend perpetuated by the media. Economic factors like not affording to buy computers also play role in their preferences.
Civil is not preferred under the wrong notion that long hours have to be spent under the sun in this profession. One student joined agriculture as his father believed it may help to get a government job.
1st gen students are at a disadvantage in a sense they are short of information and have to depend on other sources. Thus, most of them select mechanical. The truth is that there are only around 2000 jobs for mechanical whereas 80000 students pass out every year from this branch!
