Helmet sellers who sell the product above retail price are pulled up by the legal metro-logy department. The department conducted its inspection in areas including Royapettah, Anna Nagar, Aynavaram and Broadway. Six retailers in the southern part of the city, fourteen in northern part, and two in central Chennai got caught for fleecing customers. Most of these shopkeepers, trying to use the urge and need for customers to purchase a new helmet for complying with the new rule brought into effect by the government, have charged Rs 500 to Rs 1500 which is far more than the actual price of helmets. These violators were charged with a fine of Rs 2000 each.
Officials from the legal metro-logy department say these raids will be intensified in the following days. They also add that they have received several complaints exorbitant prices of helmets and that customers are being exploited. These officials are checking the shops to check violations.
As there is a surge in demand all of a sudden, there are several temporary shops that have dotted the city to make money out of the people’s need.
Consumer activists have requested the legal metro-logy department to take necessary action against such vendors. An artificial demand is created by several traders using which they sell out high priced helmets in the black market. Keeping in mind the interest of customers, regular raids should be conducted, says customer activist T Sadagopan.
