Aadhar Card system, introduced by the central government, has turned out to be for multi-purpose apart from being an identity proof.  Linking Aadhar Card with subsidy for cooking gas LPG cylinders, Bank savings accounts, and voter ID are some applications .

Now, Aadhar card is about to have another application to be used by Railways.

Bio-metric attendance system (fingerprints) using Aadhar Card number/identity for employees’ attendance is set to be introduced shortly by Indian Railways.

4 Regions of Indian Railways are already using the bio-metric system for employee attendance.

Now, it is set to be introduced by Southern Railway.

The delay in introduction was due to the strong protest against its implementation by Railway Employees Union under the apprehension that there will be a liability for punishment for erring employees.

This bio-metric system is set to be introduced in all Indian Railways Offices and other related important places at a cost of Rs. 4.4 Crores.

Regional Railway offices will decide the priority order of introducing the system. Then, the system will be gradually extended to manufacturing units as per the information from the ministry of Railways.

Punctuality will be enforced by introduction of this system. This will prevent the current practice of many of the employees turning up late for work!

The central government is determined that the entire hierarchy in the organization from the senior officials to workers will have to follow this metric system.

There is a web facility at http://www.attendance.gov.in/, for all the employees to know their attendance data. The attendance data of 1.30 Lakh workers will be available on this bio-metric system.

As per the current system, employees can utilise the permission to come late twice in a month. Turning up late for more than 2 times in a month will entail deduction from the leave records of the concerned employee. However, the superiors have been given the authority to consider and accept genuine reasons.
