Amma Theatres, intended to provide film-watching facility at lower rates for the poor section of the society, is to be set up at 6 places in Chennai city on behalf of the Chennai Corporation.
A corporation official informed that a proposal from the Chennai Corporation has been submitted to the Tamil Nadu State Government for this purpose for approval.
The sites have been selected and proposal has been submitted for approval to commence construction. Once approval is ontained, construction will commence immediately.
Royapuram (Zone 5), Basin Bridge – near the new Lorry Depot, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar (zone 6), Old regional office-3,
Teynampet (Zone 9), Kotturpuram, Turnbulls Road, Kodambakkam (Zone 10), Usman Road – T’ Nagar, Sivagnanam Road, Alandur – Bharahathi Salai (Zone 9) are the 6 places where Amma theatres are to be built.
The draft proposal has been sent for approval to the state government. It is expected that this approval take a month. The plan & method of construction will be discussed after the receipt of approval.
After this, tenders will be floated. Further activities will start within a week. Each place wlll be air-conditioned and will have at least 2 screens. All the 6 places selected are more than 1 acre in area.
