In the first route of Chennai metro rail, 11 underground railway stations are getting set up between Vannarapettai and Saidapet, and 5 overhead stations between Chinnamalai and Chennai Airport. In the second route, 7 underground stations will be set up between Chennai Central and Anna Nagar tower, and 9 overhead stations will be set up between Thirumangalam and Koyambedu. In these two routes, 32 railway stations are to be set up on the whole.
The construction of underground railway station required for the 24 km stretch of metro rail out of the total length of 42 km of metro rail began on 28th of July 2012 at Nehru Park, near Chetpet.
12 tunnel boring machines were imported from China for constructing these underground metro rail routes.
Following this, construction of tunnel for metro rail between Koyambedu and Egmore covering a distance of 9 km is now done. Railway tracks and signals are being set up now. Test run will take place from February next year.
Speaking about this, the metro rail officials and engineers say following metro rail services between Koyambedu and Alandur, necessary works for setting up services between Koyambedu and Egmore is now on. Works of boring tunnel in this path is over now. Now, works to construct railway track between Thirumangalam and Shenoy Nagar is taking place. In places where the construction of railway tracks are about to get over, lights needed for the signal are being set up now. Required electrical equipments are being brought for the same.
Furthermore, works are taking place to ensure proper signal for cell phones and other communication devices. These works will get over by the month of February and test run will be on then. The test run will continue for two more months.
