Until now, only English language books were kept in the US Library located at Chennai Anna Salai. In a recent development, a section for Tamil Books was started in the US Library from yesterday, Wednesday, 5th August. The popular Tamil film lyricist and poet, Kaviarasar Vairamuthu inaugurated the new Tamil Books section.

US Library in Anna Salai has been functioning since the country`s independence year, 1947. Though there are around 15000 books kept in the library, no books of Indian languages including Tamil are kept. Only English books were available.

In this scenario, a separate Tamil Section was inaugurated in a function yesterday. 200 books translated into Tamil were included in this section.

US Deputy Ambassador Mr. Phillip Ming presided.

Poet Vairamuthu was the Special Guest inaugurating the new Tamil Section. He addressed the gathering:

This US library was started in 1947.  Until now, only English books were available. A separate Tamil Section has been opened today with 200 translated books. This is a matter for delight. This is just a beginning. Though the country won independence in 1947, the language Tamil has won independence in the US Library only in 2015.

Everyone must cultivate the reading habit. Books should be considered as a boon or blessing from the severe efforts of someone else.

We have produced classic literature around 2000 years ago when no languages had been developed in several countries. The books relevant to this classical literature must be added and the translated books should be made available in all libraries in USA.

I am grateful to the Deputy Ambassador for his kind invitation – not for me – but for inviting Tamil in the library.

The audience were scanning the books about successful entrepreneurship and political & other leaders including Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy, Barrack Obama, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs.
