Indian railways has been announcing and executing several projects improving the services and security offered to the passengers. As a part of this effort, Indian Railways has planned to install CCTV cameras in 20000 train coaches at a cost of Rs. 700 Crores under the Nirbhaya Finance Plans. Indian railways had conducted a review and consultancy meeting to improve the services extended to passengers recently at Delhi.
Various issues of improvement of services, laying new tracks, construction of tunnels and over-bridges where required, and improving safety arrangements in trains as well as railway stations were taken up during the meeting.
A decision was taken to install CCTV cameras to facilitate identification and detection of terrorists and thieves Nirbhaya Funds allocated by the central ministry department of Women & Children Welfare Development would be used for this project.
Rs. 3000 Crores have been allotted for the Nirbhaya Funds for Women’s security. Rs. 700 Cr0res from this would be utilised to set up CCTV cameras in 20000 coaches. CCTVs have been installed in Chennai Central Railway Station. An additional 100 CCTVs are to be installed here. Senior Railway Security officials informed that various security measures are being provided in Chennai Central Station.
3 latest technology scanners are being installed to monitor and check the bottom of all the cars entering the Central station. 2 scanners will be installed at Egmore Railway Station.
A review was conducted on the prevailing CCTV system. It was found that some CCTVs were out of order. They are to be replaced. Locations for the additional CCTVs will be decided. A recommendation to install additional 100 CCTVs/cameras has been made. On approval about 8 to 10 cameras will be installed in each platform.
