Two parakeet pairs that belong to South America have got into the Vandalur and made it their home. They are bought at a price of Rs 20,000 each from a pet shop. The feeding habit of these species are different from that of parrots. These need to be fed thrice a day – once in the morning at 7 am, noon and at 3 pm. The enclosure is provided with fruit bearing trees and nest boxes. Even if the birds sit on the feed tray while eating, the droppings will not fall on the tray.

All pet lovers across the world are fond of Quaker parakeets. They are intelligent birds which can very easily learn new words and say them back. Monk parakeets, unlike other parrots or parakeets, make use of twigs to build nest. These will have several entry points for various pairs. These nests are used for roosting as well as sleeping. Several pairs can be accommodated in each and every nest.

Monk parakeets were caught from the wild and packed in crates. They were then caged in 1960s. However, wanting to get freed up, from New York crates at the John F Kennedy airport and got freedom. These monk parakeets named Quaker parakeets are a very common bird in the US.
