11 Labor Unions are organizing a strike today (Wednesday, 2nd September) all over the country pressing their 12-point demands including the cancellation of Road Protection Law.
They have announced that buses, trucks, and autos will not run in the entire state of Tamil Nadu. However, Anna Labor Union has not joined this strike. Hence, it is expected that the workers of this union will report for duty today, especially the drivers to operate the buses.
All unions belonging to the opposition parties have joined the strike in full swing. In this situation, the police have taken all appropriate preventive action to avoid any untoward incidents. In fact, the police had initiated actions well ahead. They have been monitoring all the bus depots right from the early morning today.
Police security has been provided in all major junctions throughout the city. A senior police official informed that all arrangements have been made to ensure operation of buses. Around 10000 police personnel have been deployed in Chennai city alone. Severe action will be taken against those indulging in any violence under the pretext of this 1-day strike.
Tamil Nadu State government Employees` Union with 1.5 lakh members has also joined the strike. They have pressed the demand to fill up the vacant posts in the state government immediately.
As all banks & insurance companies are participating in this strike, there is the risk of banks being closed throughout the country. Bank employees` union has informed that cheque transactions will not be carried out today. As even the private sector bank employees have also joined this strike, business and other financial operations will be severely disturbed.
12 unions have announced that autos will not run in Chennai today. Hence, it is expected that 90% of the autos will not ply today. The auto union has planned to conduct demonstrations today morning in front of Chennai Central Station, Pallavan Road, Saidapet, Sholinganallur, Ambattur, and Thiruvotriyur in 5 places.
