Plantain harvesting is carried out at at an area of 2.50 Lakh hectares of land throughout Tamil Nadu. The department of Tamil Nadu Gardening has introduced the latest technology known as `G9 Technology` to facilitate uniform growth of plantains for harvesting.
Plantain sapling known as `Thisu`, sold at Rs. 13/- per piece, is being subsidized to the farmers at 50% concession at Rs. 6.50 by the department of gardening. This department is also offering suggestions and guidance to the farmers about Increasing the growth and thereby, the revenue.
Initially, plantain harvesting was initiated at Theni and later extended to Tuticorin, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, and other districts. New technology has been adopted to ripen the plantain fruits instead of the traditional smoking them.
‘Ripening Units’ are used for this purpose. This process ensures that there is no loss of nutrients. The fruits ripened by this process can last up to 5 days without rotting. With the efforts of the department of gardening to adopt the latest technology, the farmers have making a profit of up to Rs. 2 Lakhs per hectare. They are indeed delighted.
The president and general secretary of Tamil Nadu Banana Producers Association Mr. Karuppaiah and Mr. G Ajithan informed that Tamil Nadu department of gardening has been extremely cooperative and helpful. It has helped a revolution in banana harvesting. Earlier, they were being exported without any packing`s just as they were in bunches to foreign countries. Now, they are being exported in 3 types of card-board boxes with weights of 3 kg, 5 kg, and 12 kg.
4300 tons of banana fruits were exported last year to Arab countries including Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Kuwait. With the increased growth, this year, 12,900 tons of banana fruits have been exported. This is 300% more than last year!
