Indian researchers have a new keystroke algorithm developed which can ease the process of online authentication process more reliable, cheaper and secure. This makes it possible with the use of unique human typing patterns.

This new method is developed at the researchers of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Jeppiaar Engineering College, Chennai. They believe this to alleviate generic troubles faced by the users like that of loss of password, increasing ability of hackers, phishing activities, among others.

Similar to scanning fingerprints, facial recognition, etc, keystroke dynamics is also biometric which functions by measuring unique human characteristics. Researchers J Visumathia and P Jesu Jayarin mention in the Journal of Applied Security Research that the difference in typing pattern from one person to the other can be an ideal method for making authentication more effective. The researchers also add that this system requires the use of different software systems that are existing in the computer which helps in decreasing the overall cost of functioning.

A new program was built for the users to log into using passwords of different lengths. The keystroke dynamics were then noted in each of these password entries by different users. The result of this experiment proved the system successful by bringing down the login errors and making authentication unlikely. Hence, the method of keystroke dynamic is sure of serving as a viable e-security measure.

The researchers also add that this method is very easy to implement, as the required information for evaluating human patterns is pre-existing in computers. They also call out for furthermore testing processes before implementing this new security measure. Keystroke dynamic analysis has large potential in the process of authentication. However, before implanting this process, there are few betterments and improvements required to be done, they add.
