Rs. 2,000 crore has been kept aside by the Corporation of Chennai to clean up 27.3 kms of the Cooum river. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha laid the foundation stone for the Cooum River restoration Project on September 15 this year.
An official press release said that the work will be done over three phases. Rs. 604 crore will be spent to complete 60 sub schemes in the first three years. The Corporation will also look out alternative ways to stop sewage from flowing into the Cooum river, while looking at option for solid waste management. They will also work on flood carrying capacity, resettlement and rehabilitation of slum dwellers and restoring biodiversity, while newly developing the land along the river bank.
Ms. Jayalalitha also inaugurated a sewage treatment plant - the city`s 13th such plant - at Koyambedu that was built for Rs. 87 crore. Corporation officials have said that the resettlement of families along the Cooum will start soon. They will also build parks and pathways in stead.
During the first phase of the project, solid waste along the banks of the river will be removed. This is estimated to cost Rs. 7.13 crore. Commercial industries and buildings which pollute the river will be pulled up.
