Body builders not necessarily strong, says study

A study published in the journal Experimental Physiology says that a physique with ripped muscles does not mean that you are strong. According to researchers, such muscles are of poor quality since the individual fibres of each muscle are longer and, therefore, were less forceful. The study was conducted by scientists at the Manchester Metropolitan University.

12 bodybuilders, 6 power athletes and 14 control subjects were used for the study. The control subjects were average men who did not undergo weight training but were physically active. The individual muscle cells of each group were stimulated. The results showed that the body builders muscle fibres were larger than the others, and also that they were less forceful. The scientists attributed this to dilution of proteins in the muscles or to change in muscle architecture.
