The earth will witness a `Super Moon` tonight when the moon will come to its nearest point to the earth, called the perigee. This will make the moon appear not only bigger but also brighter. There will also be a lunar eclipse that, unfortunately, the Indians will miss out on. This will make the moon appear blood red in colour.
An official from the M.P. Birla Planetarium in Kolkata said, Today`s moon in the evening and night sky is five per cent bigger and around 12 per cent brighter than the average full moon... Today`s moon is at the perigee and also it happens to be full moon... People from North and South America, well almost everybody, and people in Europe will see the moon as bigger and also blood red in colour. Because during a total lunar eclipse moon does not become black, but gets a reddish-copper tinge which popularly is mentioned as blood red.
This occurrence (when there was a super moon and a blood moon at the same time) happened last in 1982 and is expected to happen next in 2033.
