The BSNL exchanges in Mambalam, K.K. Nagar and Kodambakkam have been upgraded to Next Generation Network (NGN), a new technology that offers superior landline facilities similar to mobile technology.
The other seven exchanges that have been upgraded are Chromepet, East Tambaram, Kelambakkam, Medavakkam, Perungudi, Rajakilpakkam and Saliyur as part of Phase-I with a capacity of 55,204 connections.
NGN which is an Internet Protocol (IP) based technology would improve voice quality and offer broadband services, video calling, nationwide Centrex, seven party conferencing facilities besides increasing the reach, coverage and availability of BSNL’s broadband services.
There would be no change in the telephone number and billing cycle and the rate for calls would also be the same except when using other facilities such as video, picture and data.
The new system allows at least 30 subscribers to interact with one another by video calling, graphics, picture, data, and also by multiple video conferencing through Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) handsets. Under the Phase-II expansion, 40 more exchanges with a capacity of 1,75,000 connections will be covered.
