South West Monsoon has withdrawn and North East Monsoon which is supposed to commence now will begin after a week`s time.

There have been good rains in India except in Tamil Nadu because of South West Monsoon. South West Monsoon is active between June and September. South West Monsoon withdrew day before yesterday in Tamil Nadu.

On an average, the North East Monsoon will commence on 20th of October every year. But all the rainfall from 1st October to 31st December will be attributed to North East Monsoon. Sometimes, the North East Monsoon rains will continue up to 5th January.

For the last two years, North East Monsoon rains in Tamil Nadu were not sufficient. Hence people of Tamil Nadu are expecting more rains this year. South West Monsoon should bring an average of 32 cm rains but this year there was only 28.5 cm rains. North East Monsoon should commence on 20th October but there are no signs of North East Monsoon.

An official of the Chennai Meteorological Centre has mentioned, There should be 43 cm of North East Monsoon rains in Tamil Nadu and there should be 85 cm rains in Chennai.  If the North East Monsoon commences there will be rains in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Taking this into account there are no chances of North East Monsoon as of now. The North East Monsoon will commence only after a week`s time. In the next three days there will be rains in one or two places in Tamil Nadu. Other areas will be totally dry.
