Actor Vikram has been selected as the Youth Envoy for the “UN Habitat” (United Nations Human Settlement Programme). Vikram is part of the Asian Contingent wherein only 4 envoys have been selected from around the world. He has been invited for the 23rd Governing Council meet in Nairobi, Kenya. The convention begins from 11th to 15th April 2011.
Speaking from Nairobi, Vikram said that he is “honoured to be part of this prestigious organization which works towards eradication of poverty, providing sustainable Urban Development and improved livelihoods especially for the poor.”
He further elaborated that “The UN-Habitat’s overall aim is to stimulate a healthy urban development and to promote a green economy through environment development. The collective challenge is to eradicate slums and provide adequate housing as well as an improved and sustainable supply of water for domestic, industrial and emergency use for the people.”
Vikram believes that Cinema has given him so much and he now wants to return something to the people by carrying forward the goals and mandates of the UN Habitat. People wish to change the future of cities for a better tomorrow and Vikram wants to help be this change.
Vikram is actively involved in social activities and is the Brand Ambassador of “Sanjeevini Trust ”, a charitable organization as well as the Goodwill Ambassador of “Vidya Sudha”, a school for children with special needs.
He is the founder of “The Vikram Foundation” which works towards providing aid to the disabled & under privileged, women & child development. He is also the precipitator of “The Kasi Eye camp” which actively conducts free eye surgery and has restored vision to hundreds of the under-privileged sector in India.
In continuation of his various social activities, Vikram will now as an Actor Youth Icon carry across the message and work towards fulfilling the aims and goals of the UN.
