Tamil Nadu government: New welfare scheme for expectant mothers

Till as recently as 2 decades ago, there was a tradition of elderly women in the family administering home-made medicines and remedies to the pregnant women. Now, Tamil Nadu government is taking initiative to restore this old faith followed by the Indian Systems of Medicines.

During August, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa launched a special scheme for pregnant women and their new-borns. Called Amma Magapperu Sanjeevi, the scheme was allotted Rs. 10 Crores annually for the medical components alone. The scheme facilitates a pregnant woman to seek care in government hospital for supportive care from a Siddha practitioner in the institution.

The pregnant woman will be checked and evaluated and checked by this practitioner and will be provide with a kit of herbal tonics, tablets, post-delivery oils for external use in later stages.

As soon as the programme is launched, the Siddha doctor will give 2 kits for each pregnant woman containing 11 preparations and monitor their progress. The monitoring will be carried out in trimester periods. 

The kit for the 1st trimester includes: A tonic made from pomegranate juice
· Curry leaf powder
· Herbals
· Oils for consumption and external applications

The kit for the 2nd trimester includes tablets and legiyams. The 3rd trimester kit includes oil for external application. There is a post-natal kit as well.
