Halted Lorries Dot the City

Heavy downpour of rain has badly affected the daily activities of people in Tamil Nadu. This has created huge impact on commuting in Chennai and other districts including Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, etc.
As the entire city of Chennai is floating in water, cargo trucks experience great difficulty and are halted at various places. Even these lorries are submerged in water at a few places. This has hurdled the supply of veggies to the city. Train services are affected too and hence the entire city is in standstill condition presently.
Though the rain has stopped, the water in most places of the city are still seen logged and have not got drained yet.
Speaking to lorry drivers, they say lorries are unable to function properly due to heavy showers from the day before Diwali. Following this, there were heavy showers after the festival which has frozen all lorries in standstill position dotting places around the city. Lorries hailing from Andhra Pradesh and Bangalore highways are unable to enter the city.
Due to flood in Cuddalore district, vehicles are unable to commute via ECR. This panicking situation has contributed to the increase in price of vegetables. Provision items are unable to be handled from godowns.
Construction activities have always been taking place in areas around Chennai city. All the construction materials required for building construction including sand and cement are lodged as it is.
Due to this situation, a loss of Rs 30 crore per day is caused which has counted to Rs 150 crore loss so far.
Furthermore, lorries have also got stuck up in water at a few places and the workers find it troublesome to rescue these heavy vehicles.
The road conditions are also very poor which adds fuel to the fire. On the whole, just 10 percent of total number of lorries is being functioned presently. It will take a minimum of one week for all these lorries to recover and get back to their regular functioning.
