T.S. Thakur appointed new Chief Justice of India

On Wednesday President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Justice T.S. Thakur as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI). He served as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court in 2009.
CJI H.L. Dattu, who will retire on December 2, had recommended the name of Justice Thakur, the senior most judge as his successor.
Justice Thakur will have tenure of one year and one month as the Chief Justice of India and will retire on January 3, 2017.
